Punk Mathematics by Tom Henderson
Tom Henderson’s Punk Mathematics may be the first recorded instance of a math book going viral. A math teacher at Portland State University by day and an improv comic by night, Tom’s unorthodox approach to teaching and riotously engaging project video took Kickstarter by storm — the project ended up raising 1200% of its original goal with over a thousand backers. In addition to the book itself, Tom offered online games, videos, “mindbendy mathematical weirdness,” and a 24-hour Math Emergency Hotline. In short, a killer project executed brilliantly.
Honorable Mention: Melissa Grant and Meaghan O’Connell brought real stories about sex to hundreds of backers with their anthology Coming & Crying; Chunklet Magazine’s The Indie Cred Test launched a war on cool with one of the best pitch videos ever and some of the most hilarious update videos — yes — ever; and Christine Forster launched a delightful collaborative campaign to bring “esoteric love to the mainstream” with 1000 Haiku, 1000 Strangers.
