A House in California by Jake Elliott
A black and white homage to 8-bit adventure games of yore, A House in California is a minimalist point-and-click adventure game that already feels like a classic. Creator Jake Elliott took his approach to experimental new levels when he decided to both offer the game for free online and release the source code to players, enabling them to add their own, new elements. The concept hit home, reaching more than twice its funding goal throughout its brief duration, and eventually scoring a nomination for an Independent Gaming Award.
Honorable Mention: More big ideas on miniature budgets, Kyle McCoy’s Project Springfield recreated the Simpson’s notorious city as 3D pixel art; EFFALO’s open-source, bicycle powered synthesizer, Velosynth; and Cheong-ah Hwang’s meticulously handcrafted characters for Red Riding Hood Paper Sculpture.
