the final product - the kickstarter-backer mural @neilhimself and I just painted for this beautiful woman and the little baby girl in her beautiful belly. neil did the moon. I did the balloon. we both did the piano and everything else. TEAMWORK
Lately I’ve been looking back at photos taken in previous years…I guess to try and remember where my head or heart was at a given time. This is a screenshot I took of @AmandaPalmer’s “Theatre Is Evil” @Kickstarter almost a year ago to the minute for some reason or another.*
It was gonna be my graduation party from high school. But then she could [only] do it in July, so it was just a normal backyard bash. My parents were here. She came here about 4:30. And then we hung out and talked and swam. I knew she liked hummus and pita bread, so we had to go somewhere special to get that. And she enjoys her wine, so we had wine. Well, she had wine. Her manager brought her piano to the backyard underneath the lamppost. And she played for like an hour. We got to hear the album before anyone else. Then we sat around a campfire. I couldn’t even think straight when she was near me. We were lying in the grass together, and then one of my friends was like, ‘Can you sign my phone?’ So she was on my stomach, like, signing people’s phones. And I was, like, lying there shaking. It was amazing.

Incorporating an entire gallery filled with visual art created by Palmer and her friends, all connected to the forthcoming album, with live performance and lots of interaction with the crowd, the event did appear to be one giant art project. And the message wasn’t simply that Palmer has a new album on the way and it’s going to be awesome. It’s that you can create too.
Amanda Palmer’s latest project update gets real. Really real: “Here’s some very back-of-the-napkin costs to manufacture the goods, with a rough estimate of about what we’d have sold if we got to a million.”
Transparency has always been a hallmark of a well-run Kickstarter project, and while nobody is surprised to see Palmer hitting the home-run of all cost-breakdown-project-updates, we are still really psyched about it. Plus, this:
ONE…we are committed to doing amazing things for all of you who pledged. sure, it’s going to cost more to make things extra fancy (and for us to ship things for FREE all over the world), but making this stuff amazing IS THE POINT. if i skimped on making the packaging and actual products INCREDIBLE, i’d be an idiot.
