Creator Anita Sarkeesian spoke at TEDxWomen 2012 to discuss her influential Kickstarter project, Tropes vs. Women in Video Games, and the state of feminism in pop culture today. Congratulations on a tough, insightful, and thought-provoking year.
Ann DeOtte’s designs solve a basic problem: Can you bike in comfort and dress with style?
Her clever answer is Iva Jean, a line of functional clothing for women cyclists that works on and off your ride. DeOtte’s pieces employ just a few clever nips and tucks to seamlessly transition from road to office.
Take the Reveal skirt, pictured above. The tailored skirt unzips in the back to expose additional fabric for easy pedaling, and features a high-waisted cut for comfortable coverage. It’s safety first and fashion forward at the same time — and it’s also our Project of the Day.
A personal exploration of the tumultuous ’60s as told by the women on the front lines, the film seeks to memorialize a pivotal moment for women’s rights while drawing direct linkages to ongoing struggles in the present day.
Fierce, funny, inspiring, and pissed off, these women re-imagined sisterhood for a new era and transformed protest into a paradigm shift. Created by two award-winning filmmakers, this doc is now seeking finishing funds through a Kickstarter campaign.
Brooklyn-based musician Shilpa Ray has a lot to say about politics in America — an attitude reflected by her songs, which draw on contemporary social and political issues for inspiration and rock out in the face of hypocrisy, peer pressure, and casual ignorance.
Something Shilpa Ray doesn’t have a lot of? Funds. So she turned to Kickstarter to make a music video inspired by the recent controversy over US Senate candidate Todd Akin’s remarks on rape. Yesterday, Ray launched the video into the world, bringing a touch of black humor to a serious debate.
Love Your Rebellion: A Zine for Everyday Rebels is a bi-annual publication that seeks to empower women, girls, and feminists the world over. Love Your Rebellion publishes interviews, creative writing, feminist criticism and theory, and graphic art all about self-acceptance, self-love, and self-empowerment from a diverse body of voices. Love Your Rebellion will be made available for purchase in three ways: a downloadable PDF, an Ipad App, and a print zine. Along with purchasing the zine, the buyer will receive an item of their choosing—including a canvas tote bag, a button, a shirt, a sticker, and a wallet—based on their contribution to Love Your Rebellion. Of course, all buyers will receive free fliers to spread the rebellion.
Your Kickstarter contribution will go to ink, paper, a used industrial copier, the Apple App Developer’s fee, internet marketing (Google, SEO), and materials to make merchandise (logo stencils, canvas, recycled materials, a button press, etc.). These funds will ensure continued revenue and success for Love Your Rebellion.
This is a project from my hometown & it’s cool as shit. This also makes me feel really great about things going on in Fort Myers. Click-through to the Kickstarter page. :D
